The Open Circle Social Competency Program is our formal K-2 curriculum used to teach social and emotional skills and strategies. The goal of the program is to "foster the development of relationships that support safe, caring and respectful learning communities of children and adults." We hope that students learn to value themselves, others and the classroom/school community through Open Circle lessons and activities.

 

Our Open Circle Coordinator, Tom Flaherty-Dawson, recently hosted a parent information night to explain the program in more depth. Tom and his colleague, Carol Wait, modeled lessons and discussed key ideas that are presented in the curriculum. Tom also shared a variety of children's literature used to teach and reinforce specific social and emotional concepts. You will find that books are grouped by topics, such as friendship, feelings, anger, differences etc.
