How Parents can Help

Students who are identified as English Language Learners (ELL) have a designated proficiency level.

The English Proficiency Level is determined initially by the Pre-IPT or the IPT assessment. Thereafter, progress reports, report cards, and the annual standardized test, the Massachusetts English Proficiency Assessment (MEPA) help to determine student proficiency levels.

English language proficiency refers to the student's level of ability in the four domains of language: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

0= No demonstrated proficiency

1= Limited command of verbal formulae

2= Command of common objects/activities, speech is limited to interpersonal contexts

3= Adequate vocabulary and comprehension to permit supported classroom discussion; language structures are usually incorrect as students expresses his/her own ideas

4=Can rephrase ideas and thoughts to express meaning despite gaps in vocabulary; can work systematically on grammar errors and show progress over time

5=Use of interpersonal speech approximates that of a native speaker, but student continues to need support in learning academic vocabulary, reading for meaning, and writing sufficiently and independently in specific formats or genres
